The Delft3D Flexible Mesh Suite (Delft3D FM) is the successor of the Delft3D 4 Suite. Like Delft3D 4, the Delft3D FM Suite can simulate storm surges, hurricanes, tsunamis, detailed flows and water levels, waves, sediment transport and morphology, water quality and ecology, and is capable of handling the interactions between these processes.

Delft3D is a software suite for modeling hydrodynamics, currents, waves, sediment transport, water quality, and bottom morphology in rivers, estuaries, coastal waters, and seas. It is not a single “program” in the traditional sense, but a set of modules for scientific and engineering calculations that:
- calculates the movement of water in time and space (2D and 3D) under the influence of wind, tides, and density;
- models the transport and accumulation of sediment, the formation of banks and the bottom;
- evaluates water quality, the spread of pollutants and the behavior of biological components;
- used for analyzing river hydraulics, designing coastal structures, assessing the consequences of storms, etc.
Delft3D FM Suite is a modern version of the Delft3D software package, where FM stands for Flexible Mesh.
The main difference is the use of an unstructured (flexible) computational grid instead of a rigid rectangular one. This allows:
- build very detailed models in narrow places (straits, ports, river beds);
- use larger cells where high accuracy is not needed;
- save computing resources;
- model complex coastlines and hydraulic structures.
Simply put: the model becomes more accurate and faster with complex geometry.
FM Suite combines several interconnected modules:
- D-Flow FM — hydrodynamics (currents, water levels, tides, floods);
- D-Wave – wave modeling;
- D-Water Quality (D-WAQ) — water quality and pollutant transfer;
- Morphodynamics – sediment transport and changes in bottom relief.
Delft3D FM is used for:
- calculation of flood zones and floods;
- design of ports and coastal protection structures;
- assessment of the impact of construction on the environment;
- modeling of deltas, estuaries, and marine areas;
- analysis of the consequences of climate change.
