ClearEdge3D EdgeWise 5.8 is a specialized software solution used primarily in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) and process plant industries for automated point cloud processing, particularly for pipe and structural modeling from 3D laser scan data.
Overview of EdgeWise 5.8:
Developer: ClearEdge3D (acquired by Hexagon AB in 2020; now part of Leica Geosystems, a Hexagon company)
Primary Use:
- Automatically extracts pipes, structural steel, ducts, and other cylindrical or planar features from laser scan point clouds.
- Outputs clean, as-built BIM (Building Information Modeling) or CAD geometry compatible with tools like AutoCAD, Revit, Bentley MicroStation, and CADWorx.
Key Features in EdgeWise 5.8 (circa 2019–2020):
-
Pipe Extraction:
- Detects and models pipes of various diameters, even in congested areas.
- Handles insulated pipes, elbows, tees, valves, and flanges.
- Supports both horizontal and vertical pipe runs.
-
Structural Steel Recognition:
- Identifies I-beams, channels, angles, and columns.
- Matches real-world profiles to standard section libraries (e.g., AISC, DIN).
-
Duct & Conduit Modeling:
- Extracts rectangular and round ductwork.
- Recognizes fittings and transitions.
-
Point Cloud Integration:
- Works with data from Leica, Faro, Trimble, and other laser scanners.
- Supports E57, PTX, LAS, and RCP/RCS formats.
-
Automation & AI:
- Uses machine learning algorithms to improve recognition accuracy.
- Reduces manual modeling time by up to 80% compared to traditional methods.
-
Export Capabilities:
- Exports to DWG, RVT, DGN, PCF (Pipe Construction Format), and FBX.
- Geometry includes centerlines, solid models, and metadata (e.g., diameter, material).
-
User Interface:
- Standalone desktop application with intuitive workflow: Import → Auto-Extract → Review/Edit → Export.
- Includes tools for manual correction, noise filtering, and region-of-interest selection.
System Requirements (Typical for v5.8):
- OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
- RAM: 16 GB minimum (32+ GB recommended for large scans)
- GPU: NVIDIA or AMD with 4+ GB VRAM (OpenGL 4.0+ support)
- Storage: SSD recommended for point cloud handling
- License: Node-locked or network license via Leica/Hexagon licensing system
Post-Acquisition Note:
Since Hexagon’s acquisition of ClearEdge3D, EdgeWise has been integrated into the Leica JetStream and Cyclone 3DR ecosystem. While EdgeWise 5.8 remains a stable and widely used version, newer capabilities are being rolled into Cyclone 3DR, which combines EdgeWise’s AI-driven feature extraction with broader point cloud analysis tools.
Common Use Cases:
- Oil & Gas / Petrochemical Plants: As-built modeling of piping systems.
- Power Plants: Structural and pipe routing documentation.
- Shipbuilding: Complex pipe and HVAC modeling.
- Facility Renovation: Creating accurate BIM models from existing conditions.

ClearEdge 3D – Benefit from a simple workflow
ClearEdge 3D offers you the option of importing 3D point clouds from almost all known manufacturers. The intelligent algorithm automatically examines the structures and geometries and recognizes them. All geometries found then automatically become intelligent objects and can be assigned to their respective classes. For example, EdgeWise recognizes steel beams, pipes or other surfaces fully automatically. Thanks to an integrated check function, you have the option of correcting and adjusting the objects found afterwards.
EdgeWise Update Juli 2025
With the EdgeWise update from July 2025, the software is even more powerful, clearer and more user-friendly. The modernised user interface ensures clearer navigation and an optimised workflow, while the extended clipping box functions significantly simplify zone-based work. New, visually supported QA tools enable targeted quality checks of pipelines directly in the model. This allows modelling and testing processes to be controlled more efficiently, progress to be better tracked – and even large point clouds to be mastered with confidence.
The upcoming video will briefly present the new features once again.
