VPIphotonics has released a new version of the VPIphotonics Design Suite for the development of photonic components and optical transmission systems. Version 11.4 provides access to professional application-specific simulation tools and pluggable toolkits for such applications as DSP and equalization, free-space optics, LiDAR technologies, Raman for wideband systems, semiconductor lasers and SOAs, and others.
The company says Version 11.4 provides designers access to more than 900 ready-to-run simulation setups. The new version of the VPIphotonics Design Suite also features new and improved demo examples to illustrate the application of the new features and modules. Some of the features of interest to optical communications technology engineers include:
- SHG in PPLN – New experimental module for second harmonic generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide
- FFE & DFE – Updated feed-forward and decision-feedback equalization capabilities to enable optimal operation for PAM-M signals
- Volterra Equalizer – Dedicated second order Volterra equalizer module for easy access
- DSP: FFE & DFE – DSP library with FFE and DFE algorithms now operating at any sample-per-symbol in data-aided and decision-directed modes
- Reference Data for DSP – New module that obtains a reference signal for data-aided mode FFE/DFE from any point of the digital transmitter
- DSP: FIR Filter – Updated algorithm to support real- and complex-valued FIR filter taps and optionally enabled automatic delay
- DSP: Gardner CR – New Modified Gardner clock recovery algorithm for high clock frequency mismatches
- OFC-based WDM – Demonstration of optical frequency comb-based coherent WDM system
- Raman Pump Optimizer – Enhanced module to support pump wavelengths optimization for disjoint spectral ranges
- Enhanced Raman Data – New macro and sample data file using the Kramers-Kronig relations to calculate the polarization-(in) sensitive Raman scattering contribution to the nonlinearity coefficient from the gain spectrum.

- Inter-satellite Channel Model – New FSO channel model for inter-satellite links accounting for pointing jitter and the Doppler effect
- Phase Screens Model – New atmospheric channel model using the phase screens approach accounting for wavefront distortions of the received beam
- FSO Link Budget – Macro for automated FSO link budget calculation based on the channel parameters
- Far-field Visualization – Enhanced coupler modules enable the visualization of optical beams with narrow angular spectra
- Multimode Fibers – Extended solvers to specify attenuation or background loss as a function of frequency for a subset of selected modes
- Multi-section Device Structures – New macro simplifying the design and analysis of semiconductor lasers, SOAs, and other multi-sectional optoelectronic devices
